Supergirl soared through the sky, following the signal from her communicator. She had received an urgent call from the DEO, the Department of Extranormal Operations, a secret government agency that dealt with alien threats. They had found something in the desert, something that could be dangerous, and they needed her help.
She arrived at the coordinates, and saw a large tent surrounded by armed agents. She landed, and was greeted by Alex Danvers, her adoptive sister and the director of the DEO.
“Hey, Kara, thanks for coming.” Alex said, using her civilian name.
“Of course, Alex. What’s going on?” Supergirl asked.
Alex led her inside the tent, where a metal table was set up. On the table, there was a strange object. It looked like a cube, about the size of a basketball, with intricate patterns and symbols carved on its surface. It was black, but it shimmered with a faint purple glow.
“This is what we found.” Alex said. “It was buried deep underground, near an old meteor crater. We think it’s alien, but we don’t know what it is, or what it does.”
“Have you tried scanning it?” Supergirl asked.
“We have, but we couldn’t get any readings. It seems to be shielded from any kind of detection. We also tried to open it, but it’s too hard. Nothing can scratch it, not even your heat vision.” Alex said.
“Wow. That’s impressive.” Supergirl said, as she examined the cube. She felt a strange attraction to it, as if it was calling to her. She reached out to touch it, but Alex stopped her.
“Careful, Kara. We don’t know if it’s safe.” Alex said.
“Sorry, I just…I feel like it wants me to touch it.” Supergirl said.
“What do you mean?” Alex asked.
“I don’t know, it’s hard to explain. It’s like…it’s like it knows me, somehow. Like it’s waiting for me.” Supergirl said.
“That’s weird. Maybe it has some kind of psychic power. Maybe it’s trying to manipulate you.” Alex said.
“Maybe. But maybe it’s not. Maybe it’s trying to communicate with me. Maybe it has a message for me.” Supergirl said.
“A message? From who?” Alex asked.
“From…from whoever made it. From whoever sent it here. Maybe they’re friendly. Maybe they need our help.” Supergirl said.
“Or maybe they’re hostile. Maybe they want to harm us. Maybe this is a trap.” Alex said.
“Or maybe it’s neither. Maybe it’s something else. Something we can’t understand. Something beyond our comprehension.” Supergirl said.
She looked at the cube, and felt a surge of curiosity. She wanted to know what it was, what it meant, what it wanted. She wanted to touch it, to feel it, to connect with it. She wanted to unlock its secrets.
She ignored Alex’s warning, and reached out to touch the cube again. This time, she felt a shock, as if an electric current ran through her body. She gasped, and pulled her hand back. She looked at the cube, and saw that it was glowing brighter, and pulsing faster. The symbols on its surface began to move, and rearrange themselves. The cube began to make a sound, a low hum that grew louder and louder.
“Kara, what did you do?” Alex asked, alarmed.
“I don’t know, I just…” Supergirl said, stunned.
The cube suddenly exploded, sending a blast of purple light and energy in all directions. Supergirl and Alex were thrown back, and knocked unconscious. The tent was ripped apart, and the agents outside were blinded by the flash. The cube was gone, and in its place, there was a hole. A hole that led to somewhere else. Somewhere dark. Somewhere terrible.
From the hole, something emerged. Something that was not of this world. Something that was not of this dimension. Something that was not of this reality.
It was a horror. A horror that defied description. A horror that defied logic. A horror that defied sanity.
It was a mass of tentacles, eyes, mouths, claws, wings, and other appendages that had no name. It was a living nightmare, a cosmic abomination, a twisted creation of a mad god. It was a thing that should not exist, a thing that should not be seen, a thing that should not be known.
It was a thing that wanted to destroy. To destroy everything. To destroy this world. To destroy this dimension. To destroy this reality.
It was a thing that had been waiting. Waiting for the cube to be activated. Waiting for the portal to be opened. Waiting for the signal to be sent.
It was a thing that had been summoned. Summoned by the cube. Summoned by Supergirl. Summoned by her touch.
