Fire DC: Verdant Blaze ANIMATION
The Viridian Fever
The scent of boiling sugar and scorched hair hung over the canopy like a wet, woolen shroud. In the village of Araras, the silence was not the absence of sound, but a heavy, pressurized thing that pushed against the eardrums until they throbbed. The Amazon was no longer a lung of the world; it had become a furnace, and the breath it exhaled was thick with the grey flakes of incinerated memories.
Beatriz da Costa stepped over a threshold of charred bone, her boots sinking into a layer of fine, white ash that had once been a family’s dining table. She was not currently aflame, yet she was the hottest thing in the graveyard. Her skin, a deep, Brazilian bronze, shimmered with a heat haze that distorted the air around her. She looked less like a woman and more like a mirage caught in the act of becoming flesh.
"It’s a peculiar kind of hunger," a voice rasped from the corner of a skeletal hut. "It doesn’t just eat the wood, Beatriz. It eats the meaning of the wood. It eats the history of the people who sat upon it."
Beatriz turned, her eyes glowing with a faint, emerald luminescence. In the shadows sat Thiago, a man who had once been the village’s most celebrated poet and its most notorious drunk. Now, he was merely a witness. He sat in a rocking chair that was half-consumed by a slow, flameless combustion, his hands resting on his knees, his fingers tipped with glowing embers.
"You’re still alive, Thiago," Beatriz said, her voice a low, melodic thrum that sounded like a cello being played in a burning room. "That’s a miracle in this zip code."
"Alive is a generous term," Thiago smiled, and his teeth were like blackened piano keys. "I am being marinated. The Mother of Coal is a slow cook. She prefers her sacrifices to be well-seasoned with terror before the final searing. Why are you here, Fire? Have you come to put us out, or are you just here to see if the competition is better than you?"
Beatriz walked toward him, the ash swirling around her ankles in hypnotic patterns. "I’m not here for a competition. I’m here because the sky turned the color of a bruised plum three days ago and hasn't changed back. What is she, Thiago? This spirit they’re whispering about?"
Thiago chuckled, a sound like dry leaves skittering across a tombstone. "She is the rainforest’s fever dream. We spent centuries cutting her skin and bleeding her sap. Now, she has decided that the only way to heal is to cauterize the wound. She is the Mãe do Carvão—the Mother of Coal. She doesn't just burn; she transforms. Look at the vines, Beatriz. Look at how they move."
Beatriz looked. Creeping along the charred remains of the village walls were thick, obsidian-colored vines. They didn't grow; they pulsed. Inside their translucent, rubbery skin, a liquid orange fire flowed like pressurized lava. As she watched, a vine lashed out with the speed of a viper, wrapping around a stray metal bucket. The metal didn't just melt; it screamed. It twisted into a shape that resembled a human face in agony before being absorbed into the vine’s glowing digestive tract.
"She’s coming for you," Thiago whispered. "She knows you’re the only thing in this jungle that speaks her language. She doesn't want to kill you. She wants to marry you."
"I’m not looking for a commitment," Beatriz said, and with a sudden, violent snap of her will, she ignited.
The transition was a masterpiece of physics and fury. Her clothes didn't burn; they vanished, replaced by a suit of living, emerald plasma. Her hair became a cascading waterfall of green fire that defied gravity, licking the soot-stained ceiling. The room brightened to a blinding, radioactive intensity.
"Stay here," she commanded.
"Where else would I go?" Thiago asked, closing his eyes against the glare. "I’ve always wanted to see the sun up close. You’re close enough for government work."
Beatriz stepped out into the village square. The "beasts" were waiting. They were jaguars, or at least they had been once. Now, they were skeletal armatures of blackened wood, their ribs glowing like the heating elements of a toaster. Their eyes were pits of white-hot magnesium. There were dozens of them, circling her with a staccato, clicking grace.
"You’re beautiful," a voice drifted from the trees—a voice that sounded like a thousand campfires crackling in unison. "Such a tiny, contained spark. Why do you let them cage you in a human shape, Beatriz? Why do you pretend to be a creature of clay and water?"
